Today is Kyle’s 17th birthday. It got me to thinking the difference of birthdays on the road and in sticks and bricks….
Sticks and bricks
You invite everyone family you only see on holidays, co workers, schoolmates, friends, and those that you can hand an invite to. You throw this big party and spend tons of money to do so. Then decide how can we top it next year.
On the road
I ask the child what they want to do for their birthday. So I asked Kyle and he wants to hang at the campground, go swimming, ride the waterslides, and enjoy his day. He slept in, I’m making him his favorite food, Anastasia is making him an apple pie for his “cake”. I allow him to decide what we do. Sometimes it is an experience or a special outing. Sometimes it’s just games, fun, and family.
I make sure it is a memory that they can look back on and be like I remember my birthdays were about me and not social status or how many people are there. It is just about them being loved on.
